It was reported today that the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner has proposed to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on motorists who exceed the speed limit in an effort to boost income for the force. Currently the law allows discretion but under these proposals, just slightly exceeding the limit could automatically mean a fine.
The RAC and Association of British Drivers have both criticised the move. It appears that under increased financial pressure, motorists who exceed the limit have been identified as a possible way to increase revenue. The proposals relate mainly to variable speed limits along stretches of the M1 which runs through Bedfordshire.
